Coach Solis balances high demands from his players and coaches with a "father figure" approach. It starts with building strong personal bonds with players that make them willing to "go through a wall for him.

Elite Conditioning is a staple at Nixon: His teams play with nonstop energy, using heavy bench rotations (often subbing five players at a time) to maintain a relentless physical and mental press for all four quarters.
Basketball is a Year-Round Grind at Nixon: "THE FAMILY" emphasizes constant preparation, with players practicing, lifting, and running nearly year-round, all for the "Pursuit of Perfection."
Coach Solis's High Standards are everywhere at Nixon: Solis is famously strict, demanding 100% execution regardless of the score. He does not settle for lopsided wins if the team isn't playing to its maximum potential.
If they have to score 1,000 points, the team has to find a way to do it, no matter the time left in the game. SCORE RUN SCORE RUN is a staple at Nixon under Coach Solis.
COACH SOLIS Accountability Is Well Known in the Great Laredo Metro Sports Area. Mistakes, even minor ones like not tucking in a jersey, carry penalties (such as burpees or pushing tires and hearing his raspy voice reminding you there is "ACCOUNTABILITY" at J. W. Nixon High School in the classroom and in sport participation) to instill discipline.
It has worked the way Coach Solis Jr. does things, or the way coaches view his Achievements, starting with UIL District Dominance: Since taking over in 2007, he has led Nixon to 10 district championships, including a current streak of five consecutive titles as of February 2026.
Coach Solis Jr. has now earned Texas Sports State Recognition: he is a two-time Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) Coach of the Year, winning at both the Texas UIL 5A (2015) and 6A (2019) levels.
Coach Pete Solis Jr. has had Deep UIL basketball Playoff Runs: Under his leadership, the Mustangs have reached the Elite Eight three times in four years and recently secured an undefeated 13-0 district record in the 2025–26 season.
Central Laredo families that have children attend The J.W. Nixon High School are in amazing company having a Coach that has gotten it done, and has been consistently relentless in keep the high standards of having his players, Helping other students become better people better students showing them that nothing is free nothing is given to you and all you have to do is work as hard as you can to be successful not just now. Still, for the future, the athletes have and the student body as well.
